What Signs Should Communication From God Display?

The Search for God Page 5.2

When I think of communication, I think of my children. When they were two years old, I remember them struggling to get their thoughts across.

Maybe they did not struggle with their thoughts, but I struggled to understand them.

One of my kids was adorable; she would grab my hand and say “show me” and then lead me to whatever it was she wanted. Communication takes many forms. Merriam Webster defines it this way.

the act or process of using words, sounds, signs, or behaviors to express or exchange information or to express your ideas, thoughts, feelings, etc., to someone else,

Purpose

The “Why” Of communication
Let me sum it up this way when we or a child or dog or a cat tries to communicate; we have a purpose. There is some reason we wish to be understood. The same is true for God. If God desired to speak to mankind, he would have a purpose.

We can theorize in these articles all we want about what that might be, or we can complain that we don’t have enough information, but still, our job is first to listen, then try to understand. When I began my collegiate studies in philosophy, science, and religion, I always mentally asked how and why?

Why did Thomas Aquinas develop the first cause argument?
Why does a biome need oxygen and carbon dioxide?
How did carbon dioxide organisms develop alongside oxygen organisms?
Why did Martin Luther nail 95 theses on a door?

If God spoke, if an angel spoke or an ascended spirit spoke, why? What is their purpose? “Hey, I just called to say good job.” Okay, thanks. The purpose might be for encouragement, maybe remain steadfast; maybe, you get the idea. Purpose is the “why” of communication.

Would Communication Display Signs Of Deity?

The how of Godly communication
If “purpose is the why of communication,” then signs and wonders would be the how of communication. If you were God and wanted to communicate, how would you convince humankind you were God? I have thought about this deeply. I would do whatever I needed to do to get someone’s attention.

Burning bush? Sure.
Fire from heaven? Okay.
Loud booming voice? Check.
Visions? Dreams? Yes, and yes.

I would pound the table. I would speak to multiple people. Now here is an interesting question. Would you, as God, know the impact and outcome of that communication? This hinges on whether God knows the future or not. What if God does know the future?

Prophecy

his would be a massive display of Deity or godhood. I recently wrote an article, “How do I determine which religion to study.” In it, I determined that the first religion to study because it met all the philosophical and scientific criteria was Judaism. There are numerous books written about biblical prophecy. These are two I own.

No other religion even comes close to the “How of communication.” Because of how YHWH, the God of Judaism, spoke, is why I think Abrahamic religions have displaced almost everything else. This is why Yahweh, the God of the Bible, said to Abraham.

I will surely bless you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will take possession of the cities of their enemies, and through your offspring all nations on earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed me.
Yahweh
Genesis 22:17-18

Hath God Said?

First, we focused on “the why”, the purpose of communication. Then, “the how of communication.” Finally, as you read at the end of the last section, “the who of communication.” We understand that there exists a who, what, where, why, how, and when during communication.

Who is speaking? What are they talking about? Where did communication occur? Why? How did they communicate? And When. When we communicate, we reveal something about ourselves. Do we use hand gestures? Do we only talk when we want something? Are we harsh? Are we kind?

Many of these interpretations will be assigned by the hearer. I have learned that many times in my 27 years of marriage, how I say something can be even more important than what I say. Why and How I communicate, reveal much about who I am. The same can be said for God.

Many of the previous articles dealt with theories and speculation about what God characteristics should resemble, and how we often come with expectations, so too for communication. How do I put aside those expectations and seek understanding?

I should expect proof but seek understanding. We will find out much about the creator of the universe’s nature and character by listening first.

What Does God Say?

Finally, we get to what we really want to experience. What does God say to humanity? What God says is dependent upon God’s purpose, character, and nature. We only find this out by listening first. But knowing much about human nature, or I should say little. My wife says, “tons of book smarts, but no street smarts.”

Still, I know that if I ask 1000 people if two plus two equals four, I will not get 100% yes answers. Whether people want to be funny or think it is a trick, you will not get 100% of humans to agree on anything. I challenge anyone to prove me wrong. Maybe if you get 1000 3rd graders, but not if you pick 1000 random people.

What signs should communication from God display

Many people do not even reach this evaluation stage to listen to what Yahweh of the bible says. Whether from preconceived notions or anger about what some Jew or Christian did, or maybe they have grown up in another religion and are unwilling even to consider another idea.

But most sadly is the atheist, who thinks himself wise but is just being a fool. Check out why being an agnostic is more honest than atheism.

You see, even if we heard God say, “I am here,” what most of us want is God to call and say, “Good job.”

We want to keep doing what makes us happy. We don’t want what God wants. But what I seek is the Truth.

Do I Really Seek The Truth?

I say I want to know the truth about the universe, how humans came to exist. I want the truth about why humans are here? Where are we going? But was I willing to listen and take an honest look at what the bible communicated? Honestly, no, I wasn’t.

Hopefully, if you have read this far, you are willing to honestly consider what the God of the bible says. What changed for me? Sin, I realized I could not pretend to be better than any Christian, I could no longer convince myself that I could stand in front of a judge and proclaim my innocence or goodness.

Changed Lives

Communication not only involves a sender but a receiver. When that message comes to another person’s ears and enters into their brain, it can be processed in many different ways. Jesus told the parable the best.

A farmer went out to sow his seed. As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root. Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants. Still, other seed fell on good soil, where it produced a crop—a hundred, sixty, or thirty times what was sown. Whoever has ears, let them hear. Mat 13:4-9

For many years most of the seeds people sowed and scattered in my direction were picked up by birds, the wind, there was very little soil. The soil, the place of growth, is not your brain but your heart. Mine was hard, impenitent, self-righteous, and proud.

We wish that God would show us a sign. We think that if we saw those things, then we would believe. We think if only God would speak to me directly, then I would believe. But for 2000 years, men and women have believed with all the information we have been given to this point.

Jesus
Mat 12:39-40
A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a sign! But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

For this people’s heart has become calloused; they hardly hear with their ears, and they have closed their eyes. But blessed are your eyes because they see, and your ears because they hear.

For truly I tell you, many prophets and righteous people longed to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it
.
Mat 13:16-17

We want communication our way. We want the content of the message geared to make us happy. We want the method of communication easy on our minds and hearts. As a former calloused heart, closed-eyed person, I despised the content and method of communication. What signs should communication from God display?

We have the Testaments old and new, with prophets, prophecies, and Jesus resurrection from the dead. Will it change your life? God communicated. Are we listening?
